West Cork Youth Award Winner Lily de la Cour

We are delighted to announce that Lily de la Cour has won the inaugural Celtic Ross Hotel West Cork Youth Sports Star of the Year 2011! Lily (17), who is a member of the West Cork Kickboxing Club, won a gold medal for Ireland at the European Kickboxing Championships earlier this year staged by WAKO – the World Association of Kickboxing Organisation. She defeated a Hungarian opponent in the final of the Junior Light Contact minus 50kg division held near Venice in Northern Italy. Lily was also runner up in the world championships. The presentation of the overall award will be made to Lily at the Annual Awards banquet on the 14th January 2012.

Hall of Fame Award Winner Riobard O’Dwyer

The inaugural Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Star Hall of Fame award will be presented to Beara’s Riobard O’Dwyer at a gala banquet in Rosscarbery on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.

As well as giving 41 years’ service as a primary school teacher – 39 of them as principal – Riobard has had a varied sporting career, with his biggest achievements in athletics and GAA, not only as a highly-successful participant, but also as a renowned administrator.

In athletics, he won seven All-Ireland hop, skip and jump (now known as triple jump) titles – five of these in a row, which is still an Irish record – and was also chief Irish coach for the discipline at one stage. As a Gaelic footballer, Riobard won Cork county and Munster senior football club championship with Beara, was the divisional board secretary for many years and wrote a History of Beara Football.

He is also a keen musician, being a champion accordionist with a number of successful recordings to his credit. Riobard is also a noted authority on genealogy and is often called on to help people trace their Beara ancestry.
