West Cork Sports Stars

03/08/2017 | Sports Awards

It is almost twenty years since The Celtic Ross Hotel West Cork Sports Star Awards in conjunction with The Southern Star and C103FM were established. Year on year we are amazed by the outstanding sports people we meet and we are delighted to have the opportunity to recognise their achievements and dedication throughout the year.

Most recently, we have had great pleasure in honouring local Rosscarbery man Mike Keohane who scooped three World Medals at the recent World Transplant Games in Malaga in June.  He won a silver medal for the 5k Racewalk with a personal best time of 28.23, then just over an hour later he went on to win another silver in the Discus event having already secured a bronze for the Darts triples event.

Kilbrittain's Jamie Wall received his sports star award for having managed the Mary Immaculate College Limerick hurling team that won the Fitzgibbon Cup again this year and Fineen Wycherley was also recognised for his springtime exploits with Ireland and Munster Rugby. After their fantastic success with bringing home gold and silver medals from the European Rowing Championships in May, we honoured Shane O’Driscoll, Mark O’Donovan and Denise Walsh for their outstanding achievements. While in April, Tom Ferguson The Bandon RFC captain was the monthly award winner following the club’s historic Munster Junior Cup success. To say we’ve barely caught our breath on what has already been an outstanding year for West Cork Sports is an understatement!!

With an eye on the future and the development of the younger generation, every year we’ve been delighted to present the West Cork Youth Sports Star Award. Awarded on a quarterly basis, Skibbereen RFC’s top scorer in the Munster Club U16 final at Thomond Park, Jordi O’Brien, was presented with the first quarterly award of 2017. Followed by our latest youth award winner, 15-year-old Jack Desmond, Bantry ABC’s four-time Munster champion. Jack has just won his first All-Ireland title in April having boxed in three All-Ireland finals in four years. Well done boys! You’re an inspiration for the youth of West Cork that anything is possible with hard work, talent, and confidence.

The Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Awards annual ceremony will take place in January 2018, this promises to be the sporting night of all sporting nights! All the winners form the various categories, including “The Hall of Fame Award”, “Sports Club of the Year” and “Team of the Year” will be announced and their achievements celebrated in true West Cork fashion. Tickets will be available from December 2017 by calling the Hotel on (023) 88 48722. It will be a very special night celebrating 20 Years of the Celtic Ross West Cork Sports Star Awards.
